Concepts

What is each product?

Partalum manufactures four product families for the high-voltage electrical grid: connectors, fittings, assemblies and distribution products. Each one serves a different function in the line or the substation.

High-voltage connector

A metal part that electrically joins two conductors, or a conductor to a piece of equipment or a substation busbar, ensuring electrical continuity and low contact resistance. It can be compression-type (deformed onto the conductor with a press) or mechanical (bolt clamped). It is made of aluminum, bronze or copper depending on the application.

Transmission line fitting

A structural part of galvanized forged steel that makes up the insulator chain and holds the conductor to the structure: clevises, shackles, links, ball clevises, suspension and dead-end clamps. It is classified by its mechanical strength in KN (80 to 480 KN).

Assembly

A complete suspension, tension or "V" assembly that arrives fully built, not as loose parts. It integrates insulators, fittings and clamps already assembled for one to four conductors per phase. It reduces field installation time.

What is the difference between transmission, substation and distribution?

Transmission moves large blocks of energy at high and extra-high voltage (69 to 400 KV) over towers and long lines. The substation transforms and switches that energy between voltage levels. Distribution delivers the already reduced energy (up to 35 KV) to consumption. Partalum manufactures connectors and fittings for all three stages.

What is hot-dip galvanizing and why does it matter?

It is a zinc coating applied by submerging the steel part in molten zinc. It forms a metallurgical layer that protects the fitting against corrosion for decades outdoors. That is why transmission and substation fittings are made of hot-dip galvanized forged steel.

What do the voltage levels in KV mean?

KV (kilovolt) indicates the voltage level of the line or substation. Partalum covers from 13.5 KV in distribution up to 400 KV in extra-high voltage. Higher KV requires greater insulation clearances and higher-strength fittings.

What is mechanical strength in KN?

KN (kilonewton) expresses the mechanical load a fitting or assembly withstands without failure. Partalum products cover from 80 to 480 KN depending on the application and voltage level; each part states its reference value.

What is the NEMA bolt-hole pattern?

The NEMA pattern (2N, 4N, 6N, 8N) defines the arrangement of the bolt holes on terminal pads so lugs and connectors mate with the substation equipment. It is chosen according to the receiving equipment’s pad.

What is a compression connector versus a mechanical one?

A compression connector is installed by deforming it onto the conductor with a hydraulic press, achieving a permanent, low-resistance joint. A mechanical connector clamps the conductor with bolts and can be removed. The choice depends on the application and the conductor.

How do I select the right connector or fitting?

Identify the reference standard (CFE or NMX-ANCE), the conductor type (ACSR, ACSS, AS or copper MCM), the voltage level in KV and the required mechanical strength in KN. With that data, send us your specification at /quote/ and we’ll reply with the right line and part.
